Some players love a small soprano. Others get a few chords in and wish their fingers had more room. If you are in that second group, the Kala Pacific Walnut tenor ukulele is a good one to try. The longer 16.875 inch scale spreads the frets out, and the larger body may feel more familiar if you already play guitar.

The walnut is what catches your eye first. Dark streaks run through the lighter brown top and sides, with black binding around the body. It has a satin finish rather than a glossy one. If you like seeing the wood instead of a bright color or a heavy shine, this one makes sense.

A little more room to play

With 18 frets, you have room to work on melodies farther up the neck as well as the chords you use every day. The neck is mahogany, the fingerboard is rosewood, and it comes with Aquila Super Nylgut strings. Whether you mostly strum along with songs or want to spend time on fingerpicking, the first thing to check is how that tenor spacing feels in your hand.

There is no built in pickup. For playing at home, that keeps things simple. For a gig through a PA or a recording session, you will need a microphone or a separate pickup. It is better to know that now than find out at soundcheck.
